Every 8th of December, Taguig celebrates its cityhood day.

Taguig Cityhood

In 1998, Republic Act No. 8487 was enacted, pushing for the cityhood of Taguig. The resulting plebiscite on April 25, 1998 showed that the citizens were against the cityhood. A recent petition to the Supreme Court sought a recount of the plebiscite and on February 19, 2004, the Supreme Court ordered the Commission on Elections to conduct a recount.

The recount results indicated majority support for Taguig's municipality to attain city status, with 21,105 "yes" and 19,460 "no" votes. Consequently, Taguig officially became a city on December 8, 2004. Taguig was the 14th city in Metro Manila.

Today, Taguig Cityhood Day serves as a time for reflection, celebration, and recognition of Taguig's journey from its humble beginnings as a municipality to its status as a dynamic, Highly Urbanized City.

The occasion not only honors the historical significance of December 8, 2004, but also pays tribute to the continued growth, development, and achievements that define Taguig as a vital and progressive urban center in the Philippines.
